NEW DELHI: The Islamabad high court on Tuesday suspended former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s conviction and three-year sentence in connection with Toshakhana corruption case. The court has also ordered Imran Khan to be released on bail.
A division bench comprising Islamabad high court chief justice Aamir Farooq and justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri announced the verdict.
“Our application has been accepted, and the sentence has been suspended,” Imran Khan’s lawyer lawyer Naeem Panjutha said on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The cricketer-turned-politician was sentenced to three years in prison by an Islamabad trial court in the Toshakhana corruption case in which he is accused of profiting from selling expensive state gifts when he was in power.
He was subsequently arrested by Punjab police from his residence in Lahore.
Earlier, the Supreme Court, after hearing various petitions against the Toshakhana case, observed that there were “shortcomings” in the judgment of the sessions court.
The Toshakhana case was filed by ruling party lawmakers in 2022 in the ECP, alleging that Khan concealed the proceeds from the sale of state gifts.
As per Toshakhana rules, gifts/presents and other such materials received by persons to whom these rules apply shall be reported to the Cabinet Division.
